Looming factory

This alliance aims to develop and validate new industrial technologies in pilot plants.

It brings together research groups and companies with the goal of accelerating the transition to the new scenario of Industry 4.0. A new stage characterized by the interconnection between machines and the operational integration of workers with the production environment.

Institutions and companies within the alliance collaborate around four projects. The development and improvement of computer algorithms, communication systems, collaboration robots, and the construction of a pilot plant to exhibit the results.

Smart Factory

This project focuses on developing advanced monitoring algorithms.

Addressing the challenge of working with more complex, large, heterogeneous, and interdependent systems, while incorporating aspects such as energy efficiency, environmental impact, and safety with high resolution, based on data provided by new sensors and actuators.

Additionally, the project includes increasing the flexibility and adaptation of monitoring and control systems, which must enable the implementation of predictive maintenance strategies and be capable of responding to failures or malfunctions in industrial plants.

Connected Factory

This project focuses on developing communication systems.

The main difficulty of these systems lies in operating with different time scales and various orders of magnitude of data at different levels, from the plant to distribution and commerce.

The most imminent innovations in the field of communications (5G networks, new communication protocols in the enterprise or Industrial Ethernet) are reducing delays and greatly improving the quality of industrial communication services.

Robots on Factory

Addresses the use of workspace by robot arms and mobile robots and their collaboration with workers.

It studies the design of robots to make them suitable for spaces typical of small and medium-sized industries, as well as the implementation and learning of movement and navigation forms that are safe for people.

The project includes the study and development of learning tools that should facilitate interaction between people and robots, as well as programming, training, or demonstrating cases.

Factories of the Future

Includes demonstrators of technologies developed in the previous projects, which will be materialized at the Digital Manufacturing Pilot Plant of CIM UPC, both hardware type (production demonstrators) for batch and robotized production, and software (collaborative platforms) for data and services.

Looming Factory is coordinated by the Electronic Drives and Industrial Applications research group (MCIA) of UPC, led by researcher Lluís Romeral.
