The State Research Agency has announced the final resolution of the 2023 'Severo Ochoa Centres of Excellence and María de Maeztu Units' call.
The Research Centre for Multiscale Science and Engineering (CCEM) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) has received the María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence accreditation. This excellence accreditation recognises and provides funding to research centres that demonstrate their scientific impact and international leadership, and that actively collaborate with local social and commercial environments. The awards distinguish organisations that have highly competitive research and training programmes, considered among the best in the world in their respective scientific areas.
The recognition awarded to the CCEM includes a grant of nearly 3 million euros to carry out strategic research and training programmes over the next four years. Programmes that will allow the Centre to consolidate its scientific capabilities, increase its international visibility, and promote the attraction and retention of talent.
The CCEM, located at the Barcelona East School of Engineering (EEBE), is a centre dedicated to research, development, and innovation in the fields of micro and nanoengineering, nanotechnology, and nanoscience (among others). It is a multidisciplinary project involving different research groups from the UPC, aiming to strengthen fundamental and applied research work where there is complexity at different levels. Specifically, seven research groups from the UPC are part of it; Biomaterials, Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering Group (BBT); Structural Integrity, Micromechanics and Reliability of Materials Centre (CIEFMA); Materials Characterisation Group (GCM); Innovation, Modelling and Engineering of (Bio)Materials (IMEM); Nanoengineering of Materials Applied to Energy (NEMEN); Synthetic Polymers: Structure and Properties. Biodegradable Polymers (PSEP); Resource Recovery and Environmental Management Group (R2EM).
