European Research Council
The European Research Council (ERC) aims to support creative and talented researchers who propose projects at the frontier of knowledge. Original proposals with innovative approaches that transcend disciplinary boundaries will be valued. The main types of projects funded by the ERC are characterised by having no thematic limitation, giving freedom to the researcher in the project proposal. These are the three programmes:
Grant | Targeted researcher type | Amount | Duration |
Starting Grant | Between 2 and 7 years after PhD for researchers with potential | €1.5 m | 5 years |
Consolidator Grant | Between 7 and 12 years after PhD Promising research track record | €2 m | 5 years |
Advanced Grant | Significant research achievements in the last 10 years | €2.5 m | 5 years |
There are two more types of projects that do not follow the scheme of the three main programmes:
- Proof of concept: Targeted at researchers who have a grant from the main programmes and want to explore potential social and/or commercial applications of their research. Projects with a maximum amount of €150,000 and a maximum duration of 18 months are funded.
- Synergy grants: Intended for groups of 2 to 4 researchers with a significant track record of success seeking to generate synergistic effects between their fields and specialties. The budget can be up to €10 m over 6 years.
