The Unite! delegation discovers the scientific infrastructures of UPC
Mar 04, 2025
On Wednesday, 26th February, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) hosted a delegation of representatives from the universities of the Unite! alliance for a special visit to two of its most important scientific-technical facilities: the Maritime Engineering Laboratory (LIM) and the Remote Sensing Lab (ACTRIS-ERIC).
The Maritime Engineering Laboratory (LIM): International Uniqueness in the Maritime Field
During the event, the delegation delved into the research work of the Maritime Engineering Laboratory (LIM), where advanced studies on wave modelling, coastal engineering, and the mitigation of climate change effects in coastal areas are carried out. The visitors had the opportunity to closely explore the sophisticated wave tanks that allow UPC to lead innovative solutions for coastal protection and maritime sustainability.
The uniqueness and excellence of the Maritime Engineering Laboratory (LIM) make it a key infrastructure both nationally and internationally, recognised for its pioneering capabilities and consolidated as a reference in research and technological transfer in the maritime field, positioning UPC as a leader in maritime engineering.
The Remote Sensing Lab: Cutting-Edge Aerosol Monitoring and Environmental Sustainability
The Remote Sensing Lab is part of the European ACTRIS (Aerosol, Clouds, and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure) - ERIC research infrastructure.
During this second visit, attendees learned about cutting-edge applications in air observation, including environmental monitoring and the study of atmospheric aerosols and solar radiation. Researchers demonstrated real-time data collection techniques using advanced satellite technology and ground-based telescopes, highlighting their crucial role in addressing current environmental challenges.
ACTRIS is the leading European research infrastructure for studying short-lived atmospheric constituents. Characterised by excellence in Earth system observation and research, this infrastructure provides critical data and scientific knowledge to support the development of sustainable solutions for addressing societal challenges.
Unite!, a New Strategic Alliance Model Among European Universities
This visit is part of the Unite! (University Network for Innovation, Technology and Engineering) project, a transnational alliance of nine European universities committed to excellence in education and research in the fields of innovation, technology, and engineering.
The universities that are members of the Unite! alliance are working to design and consolidate a new model of European university that offers excellent education and research focused on the major social and technological challenges of today.
This alliance of technological universities works with the support of the European Commission to help drive the construction of the future European Higher Education Area through funding from the Erasmus+ and Widening programs.
Unite! connects different European regions from an academic and research perspective, fostering innovation and knowledge transfer in a multicultural, digital, and green framework.
This meeting is part of the effort to strengthen cooperation ties between the Unite! universities. Through the exchange of knowledge and joint initiatives, participating institutions continue to push the boundaries of European research and education, strengthening alliances and providing a shared network of unique infrastructures to create a more sustainable future.
From UPC, with a prominent role within the network, collaboration in cutting-edge projects and academic mobility is continually encouraged, with the main goal of promoting shared knowledge among the universities in the Unite! alliance.
