The UPC leads a pioneering urban innovation project selected by the Proactive City 2024 program

The REGALIM project obtains the best evaluation of the proposals presented in the Proactive City program: Drought Mission, of the BIT-Habitat foundation and Barcelona City Council.
The call aims to promote urban innovation in an open, plural, and multidisciplinary manner, with the goal of finding real solutions to the urban challenge of improving the integral water cycle in Barcelona and addressing drought emergencies. In these proposals, citizens must actively participate in creating proposals and solutions to the city's needs.
The first grant of €80,000 has been awarded to the REGALIM project. The project's objective is to REconfigure sanitary systems to GArantee efficient use of cold water and LIMit its wastage. This interdisciplinary proposal is coordinated by the Grup d'Enginyeria Ambiental i Microbiologia (GEMMA) at UPC, with the participation of the Grup de Recerca en Ciència i Enginyeria de Fluids (GReCEF), the cooperative Tarpuna, and the Federació de Gremis d'Instal·ladors de Catalunya.
The lead researcher of the project is Joan García, a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and a member of the GEMMA group.
The BIT-Habitat Foundation (Barcelona Institute of Technology for the Habitat) of the Barcelona City Council aims to promote urban innovation in its social, economic, technological, and environmental dimensions, with the goal of addressing the new challenges faced by cities, in collaboration with all involved stakeholders. It drives initiatives aimed at creating a more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable city, thereby improving the quality of life of its habitants.
