EU Missions

Overview of the Subprogram
The EU Missions, within the Horizon Europe program, are a new way of organizing R&D&I projects with the objectives of including citizens, private resources, and public government actors to achieve effective and measurable implementation of the proposed solutions. The long-term goals they pursue are aligned with the European Union's political priorities, such as the European Green Deal, the European Cancer Plan, and the Sustainable Development Goals.

You can find the calls on the Funding & Tenders Portalor in the Work Programme 2023 - 2025.

Mission Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities

Cities are the most important population hubs in Europe, hosting 70% of the population in only 4% of the territory. They are also the main consumers of energy and generators of CO2 emissions (70%). Therefore, the Cities Mission aims to achieve 100 climate-neutral cities by 2030. These cities should also become hubs for experimentation, innovation, and the generation of practical solutions.

Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters

The mission aims to protect and restore the health of oceans and waters through innovation and citizen involvement. The way to achieve the goals is by creating regional “Lighthouses” in each of the seas of the European Union (Mediterranean, North Sea, Baltic Sea, Arctic-Atlantic, and Danube-Black Sea region). The “Lighthouses” are regional centers that aim to monitor and implement solutions and activities for water management, conservation, and use.

Mission A Soil Deal for Europe

It is estimated that between 60% and 70% of European soil is in poor condition. To reverse this, the Mission A Soil Deal for Europe aims to create a network of 100 living labs that combine in-situ soil condition study with a strong social science component to assess management practices. This network should help reduce soil erosion, desertification, and pollution and improve the dissemination of knowledge across society.
