European Innovation Council (EIC)

Description of the subprogramme

The European Innovation Council is the single window established by the European Commission to aggregate innovations of all kinds. It was consolidated in 2021 under the Horizon Europe framework programme, after two years of a pilot phase. There are three funding lines aimed at covering all phases of the innovation process. Within each line, there are two types of funding: Open, which allows thematic freedom, or Challenge, which are guided by a set of predefined areas and objectives.

  • EIC Pathfinder: Projects exploring new technological areas, especially deep-tech with high potential, are funded. There are two types of Pathfinder: Open, which allows thematic freedom, or Challenge, which are guided by a set of predefined areas and objectives.
  • EIC Transition: Transition projects must move from the concept proof to applicable technologies with a TRL level of 5 or 6. It also includes the development of business proposals for future commercialisation. Access to this funding is limited to projects that stem from EIC Pathfinder results, ERC Proof of Concept calls, and H2020 or Horizon Europe calls.
  • EIC Accelerator: The Accelerator supports companies that can bring highly innovative and scalable technologies to the market. There are different forms of financing depending on the time horizon of the innovation's applicability. Final TRLs are expected to be 8 or 9.

More information can be found on the EIC website.
